What makes it apizza

Apizza (say "ah-BEETS") is New Haven's pizza: thin, chewy, and charred at the edges, baked in a very hot brick oven and served on a sheet pan, often cut into uneven pieces. A plain tomato pie comes with grated cheese and no mozzarella unless you ask for it ("mootz"), and the white clam pie is the one people drive for.

The 27 on this list

8 are in New Haven itself and 13 are branches of an older pizzeria, listed with the original they come from. The longest at the same address: Modern Apizza in New Haven, there since 1934; Zuppardi's Apizza in West Haven, there since 1934; Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, there since 1936; Sally's Apizza in New Haven, there since 1938. See Connecticut's oldest restaurants for all 55 with a year at the same address. 26 more places put "apizza" in their name; you'll find them in the app's directory, not here, until they've been checked by hand.

How we checked: We looked each place up by hand in October 2026 and kept it only with a 2025 or 2026 source: its own site or menu, a dated post, local news, or a tourism listing, plus a check of the street address. Shacks and dairy bars that close for part of the year are marked seasonal, with their dates where they post them, so look before a long drive. Anything without a current source stayed off. No review site fed this list, and the order is by region and town, not by anyone's rating. Hours and menus change; call ahead.

On a phone, the Connecticut Eats app puts the nearest of these pizzerias first and hands each one to Apple Maps for hours, photos, and directions. Headed for the shore after? See the lobster roll and clam shack guide.
